Mainz University of Applied Sciences is a founding member of the Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences (mainzed). mainzed is a joint initiative of six scientific institutions to promote digital methodology in the humanities and cultural sciences in Mainz. Its aim is to develop a specific profile for Mainz. Partners of Mainz University of Applied Sciences are the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (ADW), Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz. (IGL), the Leibniz Institute for European History (IEG) and the Roman-Germanic-Central Museum Mainz, Leibniz Research Institute for Archaeology (RGZM).

The university's activities in mainzed are anchored in the i3mainz - Institute for Spatial Information and Surveying Technology. Deeper cooperation in research and teaching, the creation of common structures and the introduction of specific competences in applied research are central components of Mainz University of Applied Sciences' research policy. The two research priorities "Information Technology and Communication" and "Materials in Architecture, Civil Engineering and Design" are laid down in the research profile of the university. With the embedded field of activity "Competence Centre for Spatial Information Technology in the Humanities", a close cooperation has been established particularly with the archaeological research institutes based in Mainz. By extending the fields of application to all humanities and cultural sciences and at the same time broadening the fields of activity to include web-based data infrastructure solutions, Mainz University of Applied Sciences is implementing one of the primary objectives of research funding in recent years.

In mainzed, experts from all disciplines in the humanities and cultural sciences work together to develop digital research in the city. Building on the expertise of its partner institutes, mainzed advises on the identification and implementation of digital research components.

Under the auspices of mainzed, Mainz University of Applied Sciences was able to establish a new master's degree course for digital humanities in the winter semester of 2016. The cross-university degree course in Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Johannes Gutenberg University offers graduates of the bachelor's degree courses in applied informatics the opportunity to study practical subjects together with graduates in the humanities and cultural sciences. It is precisely this expertise at the interface of culture, society and information technology that is in great demand in business and science. The Mainz master's degree program, which is unique in Germany, closes a gap in the range of degree programs.
