design is all you need

Master’s degree program in Communication Design 2024

Design theory, artificial intelligence

Creative approaches, experiments, new formats and forms of communication. With our Master’s degree “design is all you need,” we explore the role and attitude of design in the face of increasingly rapid technological change. What can and what must design accomplish and how can it participate in forward-looking decisions and help shape change?

Design theory plays a key role here. Like many other areas of design, it is also being impacted by change, and has to adapt and in some cases reinvent itself. However, it also offers a unique environment for experimentation and innovation, which we want to use and expand.

In this master’s degree program, we focus on the challenges and opportunities that the latest developments in artificial intelligence hold for design. Integrated in the KITeGG research project (https://gestaltung.ai), you will not only have access to the latest technology, workshops and an AI infrastructure that is unique in Germany, but also to a network of five design universities: Mainz University of Applied Sciences, HfG Offenbach Hessen State University of Art and Design, Trier University of Applied Sciences, University of Applied Sciences Schwäbisch Gmünd and the KISD in Cologne.

Our inter-institutional structure enables you to attend and help shape teaching at all locations. You will learn about different focuses and teaching cultures and be supervised by lecturers from the entire network. You can utilize the various workshops to support you with your projects. You will also have the opportunity to help shape a publication on design theory and two conferences and be part of the final exhibition of the KITeGG research project with your master’s thesis.

The master’s program is divided into different sections: In the project modules, we will focus on shaping design theory, new forms of communication and experimental approaches. Guest workshops, subject-specific in-depth training and field trips are also held here. In the Research Analysis module, we deal with the thematic and creative development of your master’s thesis. The degree program is framed with an accompanying examination in the theoretical module.
