Applicants with vocational qualifications
At universities in Rhineland-Palatinate, vocationally qualified individuals can study without an Abitur or Fachhochschulreife under certain conditions.
The new provisions of the Higher Education Act (in 2010) in conjunction with the State Directive on the Direct Right of Access of Professionally Qualified Individuals to Higher Education (of 9 December 2010) have significantly simplified and expanded the access options for vocationally qualified individuals to higher education studies.
- Individuals who have passed a master craftsman's examination or a comparable advanced vocational training examination receive immediate university entrance qualification with this qualification for studying at universities of applied sciences and universities in Rhineland-Palatinate.
- Individuals who have completed vocational training with a qualified result and have subsequently worked for at least two years in a vocational or comparable capacity are awarded a direct university entrance qualification for the study of all subjects at universities of applied sciences in Rhineland-Palatinate and a subject-specific university entrance qualification at universities. For those who have passed something called the external examination within the scope of Section 45 Paragraph 2 of the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), the requirement of at least two years of professional or comparable work after completion of training as an admission requirement does not apply. However, this is only the case if corresponding periods of professional activity are proven before completion of the external examination and beyond the minimum periods required under Section 45 Para. 2 of the BBiG.
The new regulations for higher education entrance qualifications for professionally qualified persons are summarized in the following information sheets of the responsible ministry:
- Admission to higher education for individuals with qualified vocational training and work experience
- Admission to higher education for individuals who have passed a master craftsman examination or a comparable advanced training examination
