Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
In 2020, Prof. Dr. Stephanie Swartz founded the COIL'DE network together with colleagues from other German universities. Our network now has over 20 members from many different universities and colleges in Germany.
We have been meeting roughly every month since 2020 to discuss topics relating to Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) that are particularly relevant to the German higher education landscape. Our aim is to contribute to the establishment of COIL projects at universities and to expand the exchange with people interested in COIL.
COIL'DE Bar Camp

- Morning Session (9 am - 12 pm): How to develop sustainable COILs in Germany
- Afternoon Session (1 - 4 pm): Learn and Share – COILs in Germany and abroad
- Wrap Up (4 - 5 pm): Discussion of Results and Farewell
Our Bar Camp will bring together instructors from various institutions, catering to both those interested in COIL and seasoned COIL practitioners. Additionally, we welcome curricula designers and E-Learning colleagues, who have engaged in COIL projects. The Bar Camp will involve a dynamic combination of live and online participation.
- Unconference: there is no previous agenda, we will decide what to talk about onsite
- Brainstorming: Engage in collaborative idea generation on various COIL-related topics
- Small Group Discussions: Break into smaller groups to delve into specific topics of interest
- Plenary: Share findings and insights with the broader audience
- Language: Presentations in the large plenum will be in English, while smaller groups can choose to engage in German
