2012 Kurt Dörr Prize

honors the Semay Project

And the Kurt Dörr Prize goes to.... The Semay Project. On November 17, 2012, during the graduation ceremony at the Phönix-Halle in Mainz, the prize from the Business Forum of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Dietrich Goldenbaum, was awarded to the student project. Thanks to the cash prize of 500 euros, the project was able to help fund, among other things, tickets for students traveling to Ethiopia. Under the nameSEMAY®, a unique social project was launched in March 2012 within the “International Social Responsibility” (ISR) track at the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Sixteen students from several countries founded an international student network to address the challenges in developing countries. On October 17, 2012,SEMAY® was registered as a trademark by the German Patent and Trademark Office. “As an educational institution, we feel a special obligation to actively shape the future by offering young people not only professional expertise but also moral values and opportunities for participation. Our students of today are the decision-makers of tomorrow,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. Claudia Hensel, the project’s initiator. SEMAY® has become an integral part of the department. In the first semester, the students supported a women’s weaving workshop in Addis Ababa. The donations were used to build a paved path leading to the women’s workplace.
