The steps of the application process with verified foreign academic qualifications

If you would like to study at a university in Germany, you will need a higher education entrance qualification.

Entrance qualifications acquired abroad must be examined to determine the extent of equivalency with German higher education entrance qualifications. Provided that your higher education entrance qualification is recognized as being equivalent to the German and sufficient knowledge of the German language can be verified, you will be admitted to the university placement allocation procedure.

All applicants who did not acquire their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a school with German Abitur exam regulations must send their applications to uni-assist (see address on the right). This includes, among others, the following diplomas: A-levels, high school diploma and Baccalaureat.

To whom does this provision not apply?

  • Students of partner universities who would like to study at Mainz University of Applied Sciences as part of an exchange program
  • Students who have successfully passed an assessment test at a preparatory course and possess the recognition of their foreign education qualifications with the grade point average indicated
  • Applicants who have already had recognition of their transcripts issued in Germany including a grade point average converted to the German system

The citizenship of applicants is irrelevant.

The dialog-oriented service procedure (DoSV) coordinates the allocation of undergraduate degree program placements with locally restricted admissions on a national level. The background behind this is the current multiple occupancy of study placements by applicants applying to several universities. The advantage of the procedure is that as an applicant, you have a central point of contact for all applications submitted to the DoSV – the platform www.hochschulstart.de  – and can view their status there at any time.

Step 1: Register at hochschulstart.de

First you will need to register at the central coordination center. Go to https://dosv.hochschulstart.de/bewerber/registration. You will be on the page: Application Portal for Courses of Studies with Local Admission Restriction.

To register, please click on Registration. After you have successfully registered, you will receive an email containing an activation link, among other things. Conclude your registration on hochschulstart.de by using the activation link within 72 hours of receiving it. Once again go to https://dosv.hochschulstart.de/bewerber/registration and log in with your user name and password. Under the button My data you will find your applicant identification number (BID) and the related applicant authorization number (BAN).

Please make a note of your BID and BAN, since you must enter these numbers later for the application on the online portal of the University. Your personal information will be automatically imported for the online application with the University.

Please note: Changes in address can only be undertaken via hochschulstart.de.
