AI4CAVE (2024)
Project Team
Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher and research assistants
Concept
The AI4CAVE project aims to expand the CAVE at Mainz University of Applied Sciences to include AI-based generation, visualization, and printing of 3D models. The CAVE provides an immersive experience without the need for special data glasses and, equipped with appropriate sensors (weight, heart rate, etc.), is used in various application scenarios.
The goal of the proposed expansion is to make AI-generated 3D models “CAVE”-ready. These AI-generated 3D models can be used in the CAVE, for example, to create personalized avatars and simulate their movements accordingly. One use case, for example, is forensic crime scene analysis to map and simulate the movement patterns of corresponding avatars.
AIMR (2023–2024)
Project Team
Prof. Dr. Klaus Böhm, Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher, and research assistants
Idea
The AIMR (AI-based Decision Support in MR Environments) project aims to simulate real-world influencing factors and test their effects on participants or users using IoT-enhanced mixed reality (MR) environments; using appropriate AI algorithms, the collected data is analyzed and corresponding results are derived.
A central element of this is the construction of a cave that integrates MR, AI, and IoT technologies and enables such simulations. The cave is designed to be scenario-agnostic and can therefore be used in various application scenarios with the planned sensor system. The following three application scenarios are currently planned: analysis of movement patterns in space, determination of the level of engagement among users of MR applications, and virtual surveying exercises in the Geoinformatics & Surveying degree program.
Exploration of Mixed Reality Applications in a Corporate Context (2023–2025)
Project Team
Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher, Prof. Dr. Dirk Weitzel, Stephan Struk
Motivation
The “Mixed Reality Applications” pilot project explores potential courses of action for companies in the metaverse using mixed reality formats. The aim is to identify which options appear promising for companies and to determine the best approach for implementing them. Based on this research, companies will be able to identify the potential that mixed reality applications offer for their own businesses.
Objective
As examples, patterns of action for typical scenarios will be highlighted, and corresponding implementations will be presented. Based on this, insights can be extrapolated to other companies and their areas of operation, enabling them to make an informed assessment of the applicability of these solutions within their own corporate context in advance.

House of Remembrance (Follow-up Project) (2019–2020)
Project Team
Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher, Thomas Janku, Lothar Steiger
Prof. Anja Stöffler, Manfred Liedtke
Motivation
Mainz University of Applied Sciences has the opportunity to utilize the “translucent class cube” in Mainz’s downtown area—located in the former Haus Burgund and now known as the “Haus des Erinnerns”—in innovative ways in terms of content, media pedagogy, and media technology. Concepts were developed with students in 2017 and presented to the foundation’s advisory board and the City of Mainz.
Objective
To develop a web-based app for conducting city tours in Mainz focused on the culture of remembrance, utilizing augmented reality.
House of Remembrance (2017–2018)

Objective
The goal is to implement the project in collaboration with Mainz University of Applied Sciences, incorporating new educational and communication strategies as well as media technologies such as augmented reality.
The outreach should take place both externally in the urban space and within the university. This should be carried out through meaningful collaboration between the Department of Design/Media Design and the Department of Business Administration.
By following the accounts of eyewitnesses, both historical and contemporary examples related to the theme of “exclusion” will be highlighted and presented using media-based educational methods. The joint
goal is to use augmented reality solutions in a new museum-style composition to make this highly sensitive topic tangible and interactively experiential for society.
The goal is to implement a showcase and experience space for potential augmented reality applications in collaboration with the “Haus des Erinnerns” Foundation and to flexibly populate it with appropriate exhibition content.
Of particular interest is a rectangular glass pavilion, the “translucent class cube,” which is visible from all sides and is intended to be utilized accordingly on all sides. Two of these sides are to face outward, while two sides—possibly in the form of a cave—are to face inward. Users of various age groups and with different levels of prior knowledge should have the opportunity to experience augmented reality and use it interactively. Since the museum is not staffed daily, exhibits should not only be designed to be experienced inside the glass pavilion but should also encourage interaction from the outside.
Another goal is to evaluate which forms and media of augmented reality best engage viewers, in order to further develop the exhibition and experience space accordingly.
BISGESUND (2010–2012)
Project Team
Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher, Prof. Dr. Klaus in collaboration with health&nmedia
Motivation
Business intelligence is becoming increasingly important in companies; open-source solutions such as Pentaho, Palo, and JasperSoft have now reached a level of maturity that makes their use in companies both feasible and attractive. Business Intelligence (BI) has established itself particularly in the field of geomarketing and demonstrates significant potential benefits.
To date, the healthcare industry has been largely untapped in terms of business intelligence and geomarketing: Commercial off-the-shelf solutions require extensive customization to meet the specific requirements of the healthcare industry, which entails correspondingly high costs.
Objective
The objective of this project is to design and implement methods, procedures, and cloud architectures for the use of geomarketing and business intelligence in the healthcare industry. In doing so, techniques from the fields of business intelligence and geomarketing will be applied to support decision-making in planning processes. Geo-marketing and business intelligence are closely intertwined and must therefore be considered together in this project.
