Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel Honored for Achievements in Research and Teaching
Mainz, December 10, 2024 – The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has awarded the Academy Prize to Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel, professor of business informatics and media management at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The award, which comes with a prize of 25,000 euros, recognizes his exemplary achievements in research and teaching. Minister of Science Clemens Hoch and Academy President Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reiner Anderl presented the award at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. In his acceptance speech, Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel emphasized: “This award is a tremendous honor and a sign of appreciation, as well as a responsibility to which I feel deeply committed.”
Prof. Dr. Pagel has been teaching and conducting research at Mainz University of Applied Sciences since 2014. His research focuses on digital moving-image communication, user research, and digital transformation. In his teaching, he emphasizes practical relevance and interaction, supported by collaborations with partners such as ZDF and Schott Music. In addition, he directs the bachelor’s program in Digital Media and supervises doctoral candidates in collaboration with universities. “The fact that, for the third time, a colleague with such diverse commitments is being honored with the Rhineland-Palatinate Academy Prize makes us, as a university, particularly proud,” said the president of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Susanne Weissman.
“Sven Pagel has exemplarily succeeded, in particular, in bridging the gap between business and society and in linking teaching, research, and knowledge transfer—all stakeholders can benefit directly from this,” emphasized the Academy’s President, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reiner Anderl, in his welcoming remarks.
Minister of Science Clemens Hoch also congratulated Professor Pagel on his award: “The Academy Prize is not primarily intended to honor a single scientific achievement. The prize aims to honor the entire personality in teaching and research and, furthermore, to recognize an individual who, through their work, has a formative influence on students and thus particularly fosters the younger generation. Professor Sven Pagel’s commitment exemplarily fulfills the criteria of the call for nominations.”
The chair of the jury for the Rhineland-Palatinate Academy Prize for Research and Teaching, Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel, highlighted Sven Pagel’s dedication to his students in her laudatory speech. This dedication is also evident outside the university, for example in schools throughout the state. She also emphasized his efforts to enable students to spend semesters abroad in order to ensure their international competitiveness.
As part of the award ceremony, Prof. Dr. Pagel gave a presentation titled “Human-Centered Innovations for Digital Media at the Intersection of Business Administration, Communication Studies, and Media Informatics.” In it, he provided insights into his research and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as his personal experience of career development, which he has gained through his professional network.

Since 2001, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate has awarded the Academy Prize in cooperation with the Academy of Sciences and Literature. With this award, the state honors scholars who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in teaching and research and who support the next generation of scholars. The prize is endowed with 25,000 euros and is available to the laureates for their own use in research and teaching.
