Tom Bender's Practical Project

Last fall, with the support of Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, I set off for a practical project lasting several months on the Sinai Peninsula. I completed this internship during the seventh semester of my civil engineering studies (structural engineering). The company gave me the opportunity to work on the Port Said tunnel construction project. As a subsidiary of the Royal BAM Group, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG carries out engineering and tunnel construction projects worldwide. As the first intern on this construction site, I was able to gain experience not only with a wide range of organizational processes but also with the complete assembly of two large-diameter mixed-shield tunnel boring machines. As part of a fantastic, international team, I was quickly assigned construction, organizational, and structural engineering tasks, which I carried out independently. Among other things, this allowed me to apply the knowledge I gained from the steel construction module to the design and calculation of pipe supports. Working on this major intercontinental construction site rounded out my bachelor’s degree and will have a significant impact on my professional career. I would like to thank Prof. Dr.-Ing.
