On Saturday, November 18, 2023, this year’s academic commencement ceremony took place at the castle in Mainz. In front of approximately 850 guests, we once again had the honor of presenting the Kurt Dörr Prize, which comes with a cash award of 500€.

Lola Coenen, Tanja Fuchs, Christine Held, and Sonja Schloss (team leader) of the Exam Management Team were honored for their exceptional personal dedication and commitment to the Department of Economics.

We thank them for their expert guidance of the students, which is characterized by a high level of subject knowledge, and for their exceptional personal dedication during a complex system migration.

In 2022, Alumnity once again presented the Kurt Dörr Award at the academic commencement ceremony in recognition of exceptional dedication to the Department of Economics.

The award recognizes the extraordinary personal dedication of the recipient, Prof. Dr. Paul, as a professor of corporate governance, international management, and business administration, and as the director of the part-time Master of Science in Management program in the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. His work is characterized in a very special way by the intensive academic and personal support he provides to students.

With this award, we also express our sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Paul for his successful efforts in fostering connections between the university and the business community.

At the 2022 graduation ceremony, Alumnity awarded the Kurt Dörr Prize retroactively for 2021, as the graduation ceremony could not take place the previous year.

The award for outstanding commitment in the Department of Economics went to Ann-Kathrin Grohs. Her extraordinary personal dedication during her time as a student in the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences was highlighted. This ranged from co-initiating, organizing, and executing the first hackathon in 2020, to her participation as a DigitalChangeMaker at the Higher Education Forum on Digitalization 2020–2021, her repeated service as a member of election committees, her work on the AStA executive board, and her support of the university’s task force regarding the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. In addition, she has been particularly dedicated to providing academic support to students.

With this award, we also extend our heartfelt thanks to her for her creative contributions as deputy secretary on the Alumnity Board from 2019–2021 and for her constructive work as a student assistant within the association.

Once again this year, the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences hosted its academic commencement ceremony at the Electoral Palace in Mainz. On Saturday, November 9, 2019, the graduates received their diplomas and then celebrated the successful completion of their studies with their loved ones, professors, instructors, and fellow students.

Alumnity took this opportunity to show the new alumni how they can stay in touch with the university through us. While graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter in life, Alumnity is here to support former students throughout this journey as well!

Once again this year, we had the honor of presenting the Kurt Dörr Prize to a special member of the department. This year, Mr. Lothar Steiger was honored for his exceptional dedication to the department. Not only did he develop the exam review system, but he also played a key role in establishing the AWIS degree program and introducing the ECDL.

Both his colleagues and his students expressed great enthusiasm for our decision, as was evident from the thunderous applause from the guests.

On Saturday, November 24, 2018, this year’s graduation ceremony for the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences took place. At the Electoral Palace in Mainz, the graduates received their diplomas and celebrated the successful completion of their studies together.

During the ceremony, the Kurt Dörr Prize, awarded by Alumnity e.V., was once again presented in recognition of exceptional dedication to the Department of Economics. This year, the prize went to “the good fairy of the AStA office,” Ms. Barbara Pichler. She was honored for her many years of dedication as “a vital pillar of support for students in the Department of Economics who are active in the AStA or Stupa,” which for her “has always been—and continues to be—a source of great joy.” Ms. Pichler also manages the so-called “Exam Exchange,” which many students have certainly taken advantage of during their time at the university.

The decision to award the Kurt Dörr Prize to Ms. Pichler was met with loud applause from the guests. The Stupa/AStA Executive Board also took the opportunity to thank Ms. Pichler for her many years of dedication with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and to congratulate her on the award.

On November 4, 2017, Mainz University of Applied Sciences held a festive graduation ceremony in front of nearly 800 guests to honor this year’s graduates.

During the ceremony, the Kurt Dörr Prize, awarded by Alumnity e.V. for exceptional dedication to the Department of Economics, was presented once again. This year, the prize went to Petra Muljici and Margit Clasen. The award recipients have been seconded to the Department of Economics as employees of the Mainz Student Services Organization since 1980 (Muljici) and 1986 (Klasen), respectively. For many years, they have looked after the students’ physical well-being in the cafeteria at the former location and now in the cafeteria on campus. Next year, they will begin a “new chapter in life after retirement,” as the association’s chairwoman, Claudia Huberti, mentioned in her laudatory speech. Alumnity therefore wanted to sincerely thank both of them at the end of their professional careers for their many years of loyalty and tireless dedication. The thunderous applause from those present also made it clear that the association’s decision was the right one.

 

Alumnity e.V. extends its warmest congratulations to all graduates, along with best wishes for their personal and professional futures. We hope that they will remain loyal to the university even as alumni.

The Kurt Dörr Prize was awarded during the Department of Economics’ graduation ceremony on November 26, 2016, at the Electoral Palace in Mainz. This year saw a new procedure: For the first time, members of the Department of Economics were able to submit nominations for the 2016 award recipient.

The Kurt Dörr Prize for outstanding dedication to the Department of Economics was therefore awarded to long-time adjunct professor Dr. Wolfgang S. Woide for his extraordinary personal commitment. The association’s chairwoman, Ms. Claudia Huberti, highlighted his intensive academic guidance of students, which was always characterized by a personal touch.
Interestingly, Dr. Woide—who is himself an alumnus of the Department of Economics—had also supervised the final thesis for the Diplom program. At the champagne reception that followed, the 2015 Kurt Dörr Prize winner, Prof. Dr. Mehlhorn, also offered his congratulations.

The Kurt Dörr Prize was first awarded in 2004 during the graduation ceremony at what was then Department III. The prize is endowed with 500 euros and is awarded for outstanding achievements and exceptional dedication to the Department of Business Administration at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Kurt Dörr (1931–2005) played a key role in ensuring that, when the University of Applied Sciences was founded, business administration programs were given equal standing alongside engineering programs. We also owe him the building at “An der Bruchspitze 50,” the former location of the Department of Economics. He taught economics as a professor until he became Director of Finance for the City of Mainz in March 1985. Kurt Dörr was respected as a highly qualified administrative expert, but was also recognized for qualities such as fairness, tolerance, collegiality, reliability, and exemplary interpersonal skills with his colleagues. All of this—his achievements and his personal qualities—is the reason why Alumnity has associated his name with the award. For today’s award recipients, too, the human aspect plays just as important a role as their professional dedication.
