On June 11, 2025, this year’s Harbert Book Prize winners were honored for their outstanding scientific achievements at the Annual scientific conference of the DVW Rheinland-Pfalz e.V. and the DVW Saarland e.V., which was held in Saarbrücken Castle. Malte Horn (bachelor’s thesis), Johannes Frank and Severin Brochhagen (both master’s theses) from the Department of Applied Informatics and Geodesy at Mainz University of Applied Sciences received the award.

In his bachelor’s thesis, Malte Horn investigated the accuracy of the Leica MS60 total station in the area of dynamic monitoring. In view of the increasing relevance of monitoring dilapidated structures in the European transportation infrastructure, he analyzed the extent to which dynamic movements can be precisely recorded using the Leica MS60.
Johannes Frank devoted his attention to a road safety research topic. Using artificial intelligence, visual analytics, and explainable AI methods, he investigated how the decision-making processes of AI models can be rendered comprehensible. As part of his master’s thesis, he developed a powerful machine learning model for classifying the severity of traffic accidents based on publicly available accident data.
Severin Brochhagen wrote his thesis as part of the part-time master’s degree program in Geoinformatics. He investigated the question of how deep learning methods can be used to generate high-resolution spatial images and digital elevation models from freely available medium-resolution satellite images. The thesis was produced in the context of the project Integrative SuperResolution von Sentinel-2-Satellitendaten für 2D- und 3D-Zersiedelungsanalysen (Integrative SuperResolution of Sentinel-2 Satellite Data for 2D and 3D Urban Sprawl Analysis) at the i3mainz.
The i3mainz is delighted to have been able to recruit Malte Horn and Severin Brochhagen as staff members. We would like to congratulate all three award winners on their success.
