Mainz University of Applied Sciences is among the universities in Rhineland-Palatinate with the highest proportion of Deutschlandstipendium recipients. According to the latest figures from the State Statistical Office, Mainz University of Applied Sciences recorded the highest percentage of students receiving the scholarship in 2025, placing it at the top statewide.
In total, around 1,600 students in Rhineland-Palatinate received the scholarship, an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year. Second and third place were taken by Hochschule für Gesellschaftsgestaltung Koblenz and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Overall, nine universities in Rhineland-Palatinate exceeded the 1.5% benchmark. The Deutschlandstipendium supports high-achieving and committed students for at least two semesters with a monthly stipend of 300 Euros. Half of the funding is provided by the federal government and half by private sponsors such as companies and foundations.
Rewarding achievement and civic commitment
What sets the Deutschlandstipendium apart is its combined focus on academic performance and social commitment. The program recognizes not only strong grades but also volunteer work and exceptional personal accomplishments, giving many young people a better shot at completing their studies regardless of their financial background.
“The Deutschlandstipendium demonstrates the importance of shared responsibility for education. Students receive not only financial support but also recognition for their commitment,” says Beate Höltgen, coordinator of the Deutschlandstipendium at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. “Especially at a time when the cost of living continues to rise, this support can ease the burden of student life.” Höltgen also extended her thanks to the program’s sponsors: “Our sincere thanks go to the sponsors who continue to give young people the opportunity to receive a scholarship, even in times of crisis.” In the 2025/2026 funding cycle, a total of 82 students from all three schools at Mainz University of Applied Sciences received the scholarship, compared to 80 in 202420/25.
Across Rhineland-Palatinate, STEM fields saw the highest concentration of scholarship recipients, with around 690 students, or roughly 43 percent of all recipients, enrolled in programs in mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, and engineering.
The proportion of women receiving scholarships was also notably high in 2025 at 59%. This development highlights the important role that funding programs can play in promoting equal opportunities in higher education.
Support that has an impact beyond the classroom
The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship allows students to focus more fully on their studies while remaining active members of society. Partner companies and organizations, meanwhile, benefit from early contact with to a pool of motivated and talented young professionals. The data suggests that educational funding can have long-term effects on skilled workforce development, social participation, and the strength of Rhineland-Palatinate as a center of science and research.
