Mainz University of Applied Sciences presents innovative projects for the Summer of Culture

Mainz University of Applied Sciences is taking part in the opening festival of the Kultursommer from April 25 to 27 on the banks of the Rhine in Mainz between Fischtorplatz and Fort Malakoff with a total of three projects.

Floating Lights – a light show on the banks of the Rhine

One of the highlights is the Floating Lights light show, which will immerse the banks of the Rhine in a magical atmosphere. By illuminating a ship, the mobile projection unit from Mainz University of Applied Sciences will create a floating installation harmoniously combining light, water, and sound. Behind the project are the creative designers of the “Time-based Media” degree program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, who already illuminated the downtown area last September with their installations as part of the “Mainz leuchtet” event.

Time and place: Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, 2025, from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. on the banks of the Rhine

Printing the world’s largest Bible page

On April 26, the world's largest Bible page will be printed at Fischtorplatz, and Mainz University of Applied Sciences is playing a key role here. The 5 x 7.20 meter wooden block, which will be used to print the first page of the Gospel of John from the Bbible klnown as the Shuckburgh Bible, was milled in the digital production workshop at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Workshop manager Sascha Urban spent several weeks working on the digital production of the 13 sections that form the printing plate. The Bible page was first scanned and digitally divided up in such a way that no letters were separated. The individual parts were then milled using a robot, which took around five hours per plate.

Time and place: Saturday, April 26, 2025, 2:00 to 4:30 p.m., Fischtorplatz; Sunday, April 27, 2025, 12:00 to 4 p.m.

The blue bench – listening to the Rhine: River kilometer 497.5

Stella Eckhardt’s master’s thesis in communication design invites you to take a seat on a blue bench and embark on a digital walk through stories, facts, and figures about the Rhine. On the website, visitors can discover the Rhine with an interactive map and audio guides whenever and however they want. The project “„Rhein hören: Stromkilometer 497,5” (Listen to the Rhine: River kilometer 497.5) is a symbiosis of urban intervention and digital knowledge transfer with a direct link to Mainz. Using the Rhine as an example, it shows how science communication can be made more accessible in public spaces.

Time and place: Friday, April 25, 2025, 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, 2025, 11 a.m., Rhine bank between Fischtor and Fort Malakoff
