The LUX Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences was recently transformed into a center of creative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. As part of the course “Social and Sustainable Business Planning – Making a Better Future”, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher and Prof. Dr. Anna Rosinus, ten student teams presented their concepts for sustainable and socially responsible companies. The task was clear: to develop a fictitious business idea with a real “impact”, characterized by marketable products and services.
The bachelor’s students from six degree programs impressively demonstrated that entrepreneurial thinking and social responsibility can go hand in hand. Their solutions ranged from expanding the infrastructure in Malawi and improving educational conditions to increasing efficiency in German freight transport by minimizing empty truck runs. The focus throughout was on developing business models that can be self-sustaining in the long term and are not dependent on subsidies.
In ten-minute pitches in front of a panel of external judges, the interdisciplinary teams presented their well thought-out business plans, which ranged from detailed market analyses and financial forecasts to sales and marketing strategies. The diversity of the approaches and the willingness to take unconventional paths was particularly impressive. The students proved that they can think and act entrepreneurially not only in theory, but also in practice.
The course offered students a valuable platform to present their ideas and receive feedback from experts. It showed that Mainz University of Applied Sciences offers fertile ground for innovative and responsible entrepreneurs. The business ideas presented reflected the commitment of the students to making a positive contribution to society and helping to shape a sustainable future.
