Mainz University of Applied Sciences is observing current global developments with great attention and concern. In various regions, political and social conflicts are intensifying, with consequences that extend far beyond national borders. The situation in Iran in particular fills us with deep concern. For months, many people there have taken to the streets out of desperation caused by economic hardship and political oppression. Reports of violent repression, mass arrests, and restricted access to independent information leave little doubt about the severity of the situation. Our sympathy goes out to those affected, and especially to the students and staff members of our university who fear for their families and loved ones in Iran.
At the same time, we are observing with concern other crisis zones that are currently challenging the international order. The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to cause immense human suffering and calls the fundamental principles of international law into question. Developments surrounding Greenland, where geopolitical and economic interests are increasingly coming to the fore, also illustrate how fragile international stability and cooperation can be. These conflicts exemplify a wide range of crises that are placing a strain on trust in peaceful solutions and democratic processes.
Against this backdrop, Mainz University of Applied Sciences sees its responsibility reaffirmed to clearly commit to the values of democracy, human rights, and the freedom of research and teaching. Universities are places of open exchange, critical reflection, and objective engagement with societal challenges. A democratic culture of discourse that respects different perspectives and leaves no room for discrimination is an indispensable foundation for this.
This stance also gains significance in light of the upcoming state election in Rhineland-Palatinate. Democratic elections are a central element of our free and democratic order and depend on the active participation of an informed civil society. As a university, we aim to contribute to strengthening awareness of democratic responsibility. Especially in times of international crises, we recognize that trust in democratic processes and institutions is not a given, but requires the joint effort of all.
