Dual studies at Mainz University of Applied Sciences

This content is only partially available in English.

Overview

Mainz University of Applied Sciences maintains close ties with the local business sector in the Rhine-Main region through a wide range of collaborations, industry professionals in teaching roles, academic and research projects, along with various other forms of cooperation; numerous companies within a radius of approximately 100 kilometers send their employees to study at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Our university has nearly 50 years of experience in offering dual programs, which combine a degree program with working at a company.

A dual program combines academic and vocational education in both structure and curriculum. Partner companies serve as a second educational venue alongside the university. Lectures are held at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, while dual students have an internship, apprenticeship, or employment arrangement under formal contract with an employer. Students alternate between the two educational settings at regular intervals.

The German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat) has defined three dimensions as particularly important for dual programs:

  1. Relationship between the educational settings
  2. Academic standards
  3. How the practical relevance is structured

The latter falls under the term “integration of theory and practice” (in German: Theorie-Praxis Verzahnung or TPV), which describes how academic learning is closely connected to real-world application and is considered a significant indicator of the dual program’s quality. Integration is the key element and applies on the curriculum, organizational, and contract levels.
