18th COEUR Workshop in Mainz

Urban Living as a central theme for entrepreneurial ideas

COEUR stands for “Competence in EuroPreneurship” and is an initiative of European universities that works to promote innovative entrepreneurial education. By focusing on the process of problem definition and idea development, the COEUR workshop helps to ensure the future competitiveness of Europe as a key location.

The 18th COEUR workshop took place in Mainz from September 17-23, 2022. Professor Dr. Matthias Eickhoff and Professor Dr. Isabelle Hillebrandt welcomed the students and professors from three partner universities and 12 nations at the LUX Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences.

As part of the week of COEUR, the students were presented with a challenging and exciting task:

The development of entrepreneurial ideas....

  • ...that responsibly solve relevant individual and societal challenges...
  • ...with a European dimension...
  • ...under the central theme Urban Living

To spark the creativity of COEUR participants, they received thought-provoking input from industry and scientific leaders via a variety of lectures over the course of the week. They also benefited from valuable feedback on their ideas through continuous coaching from a team of international professors, as well as the chance to bounce ideas off experienced practitioners.

At the end of the week, six entrepreneurial ideas with great potential were presented on the topic of Urban Living:

  1. Upcycling of clothing waste into sun canopies to reduce heat pollution in cities.
  2. Using urban noise as a renewable energy source.
  3. Optimizing the housing market by using a tenant-landlord matching platform.
  4. Increasing nighttime safety by using Safe Places in cities.
  5. Improving e-transportation for efficient and sustainable transportation.
  6. Reducing food waste by selling food that does not meet standards on the B2B market via an e-marketplace.

Many thanks to all participants, our sponsors Mainzer Stadtwerke AG and Rawlplug Polska, our contributors and the entire team who made this workshop possible.
