The Department of Applied Informatics and Geodesy introduced itself with a variety-packed program at Info Day at Mainz University of Applied Sciences on May 24, 2024. Attendees had the opportunity to find out about the various bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the labs at the university and learn about projects currently being pursued by the i3mainz research institute.
Julia Schneider and Susanne Weissman welcome the visitors
One highlight was the VR-CAVE, where Fabian Püschel presented an immersive walk-through of survey data and arbitrary locations in Google Earth. As part of the lecture program in the auditorium, Johannes Frank, an alumnus of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Severin Brochhagen, and Markus Schaffert shared their experiences at the hackathon hack4GDI_DE from different perspectives – those of student, advisor, and professor.

Alexander Rolwes presented a topic from his dissertation entitled Smart City Dashboard zur KI-gestützten Parkplatzvorhersage (Smart City Dashboard for AI-supported Parking Space Prediction) and explained how artificial intelligence can help make urban mobility more efficient and provide a user-centered dashboard for citizens. Sarah Hillen offered insights into her master’s thesis entitled Burgen in 3D – Von der Aufnahme bis zur Punktwolke (Castles in 3D – from the image to the point cloud), in which she captured Marksburg Castle in three dimensions using laser scanning and drone flights, evaluated the data obtained, and made it available for use in various contexts. The master’s degree program in Applied Informatics also introduced itself.
Alexander Rolwes and Sarah Hillen each held a presentation.
As such, the Info Day offered a fascinating look at the range of topics in informatics, geodesy, and digitalization – from teaching to practical applications and research.
