Why do people choose the path of a professorship at a university of applied sciences (HAW)? What are the special aspects of the job description? What challenges and freedoms does the profession offer? The nationwide campaign Die HAW-Professur – Karriere mit Wirkung (The HAW Professorship – a Career with an Impact) asks all these questions. Mainz University of Applied Sciences is one of the first universities to participate in this campaign with a video. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Mrokon, who works in the Architecture Department of the School of Engineering, has agreed to act as the face of the university. In a video shot on campus on October 14, 2022, the professor of Drafting and Digital Construction shares in an interview why he decided to become a professor and what motivates him about his job, along with what challenges him. His participation in the campaign was prepared and organized within the “FH-Personal” project.

On the campaign’s homepage, different professorships and universities are presented in regular intervals using videos. Requirements for appointments are also explained and contacts at the respective universities are given. These activities are accompanied by publications on social media platforms and advertisements in print media.

The aim of the campaign is to present the career profile of an HAW professorship in detail. Perspectives and opportunities are highlighted, as are the different paths that can lead to a professorship. The campaign aims to increase the visibility of the career profile so as to reach qualified applicants. In addition, Mainz University of Applied Sciences is explicitly committed to a higher proportion of women in appointments and, as part of this, has already been participating in the federal and state program for female professors for several years.

The campaign is funded by the federal-state program “FH-Personal” and organized in collaboration with ZEIT, the academics.de portal. In addition, the campaign Die HAW-Professur - Karriere mit Wirkung is affiliated with the initiative 50 Jahre HAWs – Unglaublich wichtig (50 Years of HAWs – Incredibly Important), which in recent years has already drawn attention to the major significance and relevance of universities of applied sciences for business and society in Germany. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the founding of the first universities of applied sciences in Schleswig-Holstein in 1969.
