Business Process Intelligence

Business Process Intelligence (BPI) enables you to understand, diagnose, improve, and streamline operational processes for a wide range of businesses. This option brings together methods and technologies from the disciplines of management and information sciences.  

All class content is complemented by hands-on exercises using a variety of data sets and software tools.

Insights into process management and the processing of existing knowledge to support automated decisions, predictions, and recommendations into future processes.

What do you find exciting about your job/discipline?

Business process management is the discipline that combines information technologies with business and management sciences and applies them to operational business processes. 

It is fun to apply new and modern technologies from the field of data science to processes with the aim of identifying and understanding important insights about processes in large amounts of data (Big Data), for example bottlenecks, inefficiencies, deviations, or risks.

What is your motivation for introducing your subject to students? 

Time and again, you hear “data is the new oil”. But like crude oil, in order to generate knowledge and information about processes from data, it must be processed first. In this class, I show students how to do this. First, I give them an introduction to the methods of machine learning, artificial intelligence and process mining, so that they not only have the chance to join in the conversation, but also know what these concepts are all about. Each class is followed by practical application scenarios using real data from companies and their processes. Students apply methods by using common software tools to gain key insights about business processes from data and make intelligent predictions.

What do you expect from your students?


What I expect from students in this option is to simply have a desire and enthusiasm to work with large amounts of information and data. And of course a certain affinity to do all this with modern software. Programming skills are not required, but will be taught in addition if students are interested.
