On February 28, 2020, the last day of his nearly 13-year tenure, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Muth, President of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, unveiled the construction sign for the university’s second construction phase in the presence of his successor, Prof. Dr. Susanne Weissman.
“I am delighted that, after an extremely long planning period, the second construction phase of Mainz University of Applied Sciences is finally getting underway. The spatial plan for the first and second construction phases dates back to 1996; since then, our student enrollment has risen from around 2,500 to around 5,800. So even once the second construction phase is complete, we will still lack space. But I still see the opportunity to bring our departments together at a single location, and—having been involved in the entire planning process from the very beginning—I can retire with peace of mind. Things are moving forward,” said Muth at the unveiling.
In 2023, the second construction phase of Mainz University of Applied Sciences—comprising a total usable area of approximately 13,000 m²—will house the departments of Technology (with the fields of architecture and civil engineering) and Design (with the fields of communication design, Time-Based Media, and Interior Architecture), which are currently housed at the Holzstraße and Wallstraße locations. The plans include spaces for research, teaching, and administration, as well as workshops, laboratories, and student workspaces, for which an area of approximately 1,400 m² has been allocated.
After the Central Administration and the Department of Economics moved into the “
” (Phase 1 of the university’s expansion) in the spring of 2009, the completion of the new building for Phase 2 will bring all departments of Mainz University of Applied Sciences together at a single location. The location on the university expansion site west of the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz offers not only synergy effects through the use of existing infrastructure but also the potential for future expansion. The total construction costs for the second phase amount to 57.3 million euros, and the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for June 10, 2020.
Markus Rank, head of the Mainz branch of the State Agency for Real Estate and Construction Management (Landesbetrieb LBB), said: “I’m pleased that construction can now begin. Preparatory work will begin, such as laying the 20,000-volt power line to the Student Services Organization, which is currently still located within the construction site. The request for proposals for the structural work will be issued shortly. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for the close and constructive collaboration with the university. This collaboration enabled further optimizations to be achieved during the planning phase. The structural challenge of the second construction phase was to create approximately 50 percent more usable floor space than in the first phase, while maintaining the same lot area and building height.”
