State support

BAföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (Federal Training Assistance Act)) governs state financial support for students, which is generally provided half as a grant and half as an interest-free loan. Studienstarthilfe (start-of-studies grant) is aimed at students under the age of 25 who are enrolling for the first time and receiving social welfare benefits.

Support is provided to high-achieving, goal-oriented students who are socially or civically engaged and/or have had to overcome significant obstacles in their educational background.

Deutschlandstipendium

 

Funding is provided to female doctoral candidates who have or are seeking a supervisory arrangement at University of Applied Sciences Mainz, early-career female researchers employed there and students with children (particularly single parents), who receive financial support through individual measures.

Scholarships

The ASA Programm supports people who are interested in global issues, want to get involved, and make a difference. It is a development policy exchange and fellowship program for young people who want to gain practical international experience in sustainable development projects—in collaboration with project partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Southeast Europe.

 

The Avicenna-Studienwerk is the newest of the German organizations for the promotion of talented students recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Through the awarding of scholarships, the Avicenna-Studienwerk supports talented and socially engaged Muslim students and PhD candidates in all fields of study.

 

The Cusanuswerk is an institution of the Catholic Church that awards government grants.

It provides scholarships to exceptionally talented Catholic students in all fields of study during their studies and doctoral programs. It supports its scholarship students with a financial scholarship on the one hand, and through a comprehensive educational program on the other.

It aims to strengthen its scholarship students in their sense of responsibility and empower them to initiate dialogues between academia and faith, society and the Church.

 

The Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk awards scholarships to exceptionally talented and dedicated Jewish students and PhD candidates, as well as PhD candidates whose research is related to Judaism. In addition to financial support, the foundation places particular importance on providing moral support.

 

The Evangelische Studienwerk is the scholarship organization of the Protestant churches in Germany. It provides support to undergraduate and doctoral students in all fields of study at universities of applied sciences and universities in Germany as well as throughout Europe. A key focus is on supporting students from families without a strong academic background and those studying at universities of applied sciences.

 

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) is the oldest political foundation in Germany. Since its founding in 1925, the FES has supported talented students and PhD candidates who are socially and politically engaged. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to society, a shared commitment to the values of social democracy, and good to very good academic performance. Contributing to greater educational equity is a key goal of the FES; therefore, first-time university students, women, and young people with immigrant backgrounds are given special consideration in the selection process. In addition to financial support, the FES offers its scholarship recipients a comprehensive range of seminars, opportunities for scholarship recipients to participate in decision-making, a mentoring program, and a global network that now includes 20,000 alumni.

 

The Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation is the foundation for liberal politics in the Federal Republic of Germany. It aims to promote the principle of freedom in human dignity in all areas of society—both in a unified Germany and in collaboration with partners abroad.

The foundation places its trust in its scholarship students and believes they are capable not only of achieving academic success but also of responsibly helping to shape the foundation’s ideological mission through their personal commitment.

 

The German-American Fulbright Program brings Senator Fulbright’s visionary idea to life: fostering mutual understanding between the United States and Germany through academic and cultural exchange.

A distinctive feature of the German-American Fulbright Program is the student exchange. This central program is supported by fellowship programs for postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and foreign language assistants, as well as by professional development seminars for university administrators and experts in regional studies.

     

Since 1946, the state capital of Mainz has awarded the das Gutenberg Scholarship to promote education and teaching at Mainz’s universities. The Gutenberg Scholarships are awarded to support academic education at Mainz’s universities and reflect the city’s close connection to them. The Gutenberg Scholarships recognize completed academic theses that represent outstanding scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement and are thematically related to the state capital of Mainz.

 

The scholarship program of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, which is affiliated to the CSU, has made it its mission to contribute, through moral and financial support, to the development of a new generation of academics who are highly qualified both personally and academically.

The target group consists of students and PhD candidates who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and are simultaneously engaged in sociopolitical activities. Involvement in social work, secular or religious youth ministry, student organizations, and party politics is all recognized as such engagement.

 

Equal educational opportunities for all: The Hans Böckler Foundation Foundation awards scholarships to first-year students, current students, PhD candidates, and artists. It also supports adult education.

 

The  Heinrich Böll Foundation  supports undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines and nationalities at universities and universities of applied sciences, both in Germany and abroad. It expects its scholarship recipients to demonstrate outstanding academic or research achievements, socio-political engagement, and an active commitment to the foundation’s core values: ecology, nonviolence, solidarity, and democracy. It provides special support to underrepresented groups, such as first-generation students.

 

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation promotes peace, freedom, and justice through political education both nationally and internationally. The Foundation provides both moral and material support to talented and committed young people, not only from Germany. In doing so, it is guided by a view of humanity shaped by Christian-democratic values.

 

Since 1999, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation's Studienwerk has been awarding scholarships to national and international students and PhD candidates who are pursuing their studies or doctoral research in Germany.

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is a political education institution closely associated with the political party DIE LINKE. Its goal is to contribute to the democratization of political decision-making, to social justice and solidarity, and to the overcoming of patriarchal, ethnic, and national oppression.

 

The Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft  supports high-achieving, engaged students and PhD candidates regardless of their field of study or the type of institution they attend.

 

With nearly 15,000 scholarship recipients, the  Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes is the largest and oldest German organization dedicated to supporting talented students. It is politically, religiously, and ideologically independent. The Studienstiftung supports the development of young talent in academia, business, public administration, and the arts. Through its funding program, it fosters in-depth academic study, interdisciplinary dialogue, an open-minded attitude toward the world, and international experiences.
