On November 12 and 13, 2020, the #SemesterHack 2.0 hackathon, organized by DigieEduHack, took place. Nearly 65 hackathon events worldwide were organized through this initiative.
Mainz University of Applied Sciences participated in the hackathon as one of six partner universities in Germany. #SemesterHack 2.0 was the hackathon event coordinated by the Hochschulforum Digitalisierung and had around 300 participants, 50 of whom were from Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Ann-Kathrin Grohs, a Student Digital Change Maker, and Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher represented Mainz University of Applied Sciences at the hackathon.

A group of eight students from the work-integrated master’s program in “IT Management” (co-offered by) Mainz University of Applied Sciences participated with the “Memory Path” project and won third place.
“Memory Path” is an app for a location-based mnemonic learning method (the “Loci Method”). In the app, users can plan a route through a city and link specific locations to learning content. The goal is to create an association between a location and a piece of learning content. The app uses GPS and image recognition for navigation. For example, users can practice key vocabulary words while taking a walk. Gamification elements are also incorporated into the app. The 11-member team consisted of students from the work-integrated master’s program in “IT Management” (in collaboration with) Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Leuphana University of Lüneburg, who worked together virtually.
