Supporting and empowering girls and women is the mission of the Mainz ZONTA Club. As it does every year, the club distributes funds raised through club members’ initiatives and donations in 2018 to social projects this spring.
ZONTA Mainz is providing €3,000 in support of the “Semay ®” student project in Ethiopia, run by Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The funds go directly to a project at the Mission Clinic in Attat, Ethiopia. Here, young girls are given the opportunity to learn the craft of embroidery; by selling their products, they can not only contribute to their families’ livelihoods but also gain access to vocational training and pave the way toward self-reliance. This is fostering a new generation of self-confident young women who are finding their own way out of poverty.
“In this anniversary year marking 100 years of ZONTA International, it is particularly important to us to use the total amount of donations—over 10,000 euros—to send a strong message against violence, exploitation, and oppression of girls and women, and in support of education and equal rights,” said Vice President Andrea von Vultejus at the presentation.
Empowering Women—100 years of ZONTA stand for a commitment to strengthening the human rights of girls and women worldwide. The ZONTA Club Mainz is grateful to be a part of this and to advocate for women’s rights and status.
