in the Department of Design, specializing in editorial design and typography.

The following position is available in the Department of Communication Design at Mainz University of Applied Sciences for the 2020 summer semester: Professorship (m/f/d) in Editorial Design and Typography

Reference Number 2019-50 Internationality, practical relevance, and an individualized, project-oriented curriculum in small groups are the defining characteristics of Mainz University of Applied Sciences in the Rhine-Main media hub. More than 5,000 young people study and conduct research here. The Communication Design program offers a unique variety of design disciplines and professionally equipped workshops, providing the ideal conditions for innovative teaching. Through the organization of international symposia, practical projects, and a research institute, the department actively participates in current discourses on design theory. The candidate (m/f/d) is expected to represent the field of editorial design and typography in teaching and research within the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the Department of Communication Design. Teaching and professional experience in the field of editorial design and typography—including at least five years outside of higher education—are prerequisites for the appointment. Professional experience in artistic and design work should be demonstrated in both print and digital media. We are seeking a recognized design professional with a relevant university degree and an outstanding body of design work that demonstrates a very high degree of independence and innovation. In addition, candidates should possess the ability to motivate students, support their development, and convey subject-specific course content in a contemporary manner. Interest in and active participation in the future-oriented development of the field are desired. Interdisciplinary collaboration with other design and theoretical disciplines within the department and the ability to teach in English are expected. A willingness to collaborate and strong communication skills are required. Teaching responsibilities include introductory courses in typography, as well as subject-specific and project-oriented courses in the advanced undergraduate program and the master’s program. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising thesis projects in both the bachelor’s and master’s programs.
