You are cordially invited to the opening reception on Thursday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m., at the Museum Wiesbaden
The exhibition presents posters from the first golden age of German poster design, drawn from the collections of F. W. Neess and Maximilian Karagöz, with a focus on gender history.
“Women in Posters: Posters of Women” brings two complementary perspectives to life in a physical space: On the one hand, the posters created by male graphic designers illustrate socially prescribed female role models. They show what behavior was socially desirable, what freedoms were conceivable, but also what boundaries were non-negotiable. In this sense, the posters construct the social roles of women.
On the other hand, “Women in Posters: Posters of Women” features posters designed by women. These demonstrate that women were already working as professional poster designers at a time when they still had to contend with strong gender-based prejudices. In this respect, these posters reflect the growing self-confidence of female designers: emancipation through poster design.
