At the eighth edition of the international conference on the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart environments, SMART ACCESSIBILITY 2023, which took place in Venice, Italy, from April 24 to 28, 2023, Dominik Visca, Max Hoppe, and Pascal Neis received the Best Paper Award for their paper “Developing a Sustainable and Transferable Visitor Information System 2.0 with the Internet of Things—A Prototype.” Congratulations to everyone involved.
The team developed a visitor information system based on IoT sensors. It integrates smartphones, wearable devices, and low-cost sensors that collect and transmit data packets via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is used to estimate the distance between the transmitter and receiver, which enables the localization of visitors.
The work addresses the growing need for reliable real-time information, using visitor flows in public buildings as an example. This need has become particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the challenges of designing adequate information systems—including issues of technical complexity, cost, and public acceptance—the authors present an alternative solution.
