Wrocław Synagogue on the Anger

November 9, 2018, marks the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht. To mark this occasion, Prof. Dr. Piotr Kuroczyski, director of the Institute of Architecture at Mainz University of Applied Sciences (AI MAINZ), will present in Wrocław the interim results of a project on the Wrocław synagogue on Anger, which is funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The focus is on the digital 3D reconstruction of the synagogue built by Edwin Oppler, which was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938. The content focuses on the synagogue on Anger and its contextualization within the framework of the construction and planning projects of the Catholic and Protestant communities at the end of the 19th century. AI MAINZ is actively involved in the commemorative ceremony on November 8, 2018, in Wrocław. Plans are underway to develop an augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) application to raise awareness among today’s residents of Wrocław about the synagogues destroyed in 1938 through the use of innovative technologies. A deepening of cooperation with the Jewish community in Wrocław is taking shape, which is expected to lead to active involvement in the planning of a visitor center at the excavation site.
