“Thank you so much for this great news,” says this year’s DAAD award winner, Kanthicha Boonyabaramee. The student, who is pursuing a Master of Arts in International Business at the Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, is receiving the 1,000-euro prize from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The DAAD makes the prize available to universities. This award is intended to recognize international students for outstanding academic achievements and remarkable social engagement. Since 2019, international students in the Department of Economics have been awarded the DAAD Prize every year.
Kanthicha Boonjabaramee arrived in Mainz in March 2020 as a dual-degree student from our partner university, Assumption University in Bangkok. Just a few days after her arrival, the first lockdown began unexpectedly, so the young Thai student has experienced her studies here in Mainz almost exclusively through remote learning, with very few exceptions. Despite the enormous challenges, she overcame all difficulties from the very beginning. With her determined, friendly, and open demeanor, as well as her optimistic spirit, she was able to quickly integrate into the international student community and achieve outstanding academic success.
With a final grade point average of 1.4, she ranks among the top 10 percent of graduates in her program. Among international students, she will most likely rank first among master’s graduates at the end of the semester.“ Her individual grades, too, are without exception in the very good to good range,” emphasizes the program director, Prof. Dr. Daniel Porath. However, Kanthicha Boonyabareme’s achievements extend far beyond her professional and academic career. During her bachelor’s studies in Thailand, she volunteered in various social projects. Notable examples include her involvement in a project promoting a smoke-free campus, her role as a mentor to help first-year students get started, and her work as a career advisor for advanced bachelor’s students.
