We are delighted to congratulate Andres Acosta, a student in the Media Design – Time-Based Media program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, on the award for his motion collage “Monomythos.”
“Monomythos” is a so-called motion collage that addresses the refugee situation in Germany. The animation is based on the “Unknown World” stages of the hero’s journey as described by American screenwriter Christopher Vogler. Given the sheer uncertainty surrounding this topic despite its relevance, an audiovisual project was subsequently conceived that intertwines the emotions of refugees with the aforementioned dramatic structure.
This heartwarming hero’s journey is characterized in particular by the musical accompaniment provided by the Los Angeles-based musician “Feverkin.” The source of inspiration for the animation’s sensitive atmosphere is an interview with Mahamuod Abdi, a refugee from Somalia, and his mentor, Thomas Strohalm. The animation explores a theme of symbiosis that sets it apart entirely from other audiovisual works online and aims to challenge the prejudices that are sometimes associated with the topic of “refugees.”
