On Saturday, May 25, the Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying at Mainz University of Applied Sciences had several good reasons to celebrate. Since the last academic year celebration in the spring of 2018, approximately 70 students had successfully completed a degree program within the department, earning either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Among the 180 guests were nearly 40 graduates who celebrated this important milestone with their fellow students, friends, and family members.

Instead of a traditional keynote address, guests were treated to Prof. Dr. Hartmut Müller’s farewell lecture on the topic “Geoinformation: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” Müller had been a professor of Geoinformatics and Surveying at Mainz University of Applied Sciences since 1991. During this time, he not only established the popular part-time master’s program in Geoinformatics. He is also one of the founding fathers of i3mainz, the Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement Technology, which, as Mainz University of Applied Sciences’ oldest research institute, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. During this time, Müller built, among other things, a wide-ranging network of contacts with government agencies and offices, for example to advance e-government processes at the state and EU levels. Müller retired at the start of the 2018–2019 winter semester but will remain with the department as a senior professor.

Earlier that morning, on May 25, Prof. Dr. Klaus Böhm, head of the Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying, welcomed eight alumni who were visiting Mainz University of Applied Sciences to mark the 50th anniversary of their graduation. The gentlemen had completed the state engineering examination in the field of surveying in 1969 at the university, which was then still known as the “State School of Engineering for Civil Engineering and Surveying in Mainz.” They were very impressed by the modern campus and never tired of emphasizing just how wide-ranging the career opportunities are that today’s graduates of these programs have at their disposal. “Our annual academic celebration is increasingly becoming a festival of generations,” said Böhm. “Among the alumni as well, the event is establishing itself as a regular gathering for former classmates who feel a strong connection to the Department of Engineering at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.”
