About seven weeks ago, Mainz University of Applied Sciences celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the second construction phase on its campus. At the end of July, preparatory work began on the construction of the new building, which will have a total usable floor area of approximately 13,000 m². In 2023, the departments of Engineering (including the fields of architecture and civil engineering) and Design (with the specializations in Communication Design, Time-Based Media, and Interior Architecture) will move in.
“We are very pleased that we are now taking a major step forward and that our university’s new building will gradually take shape—as a place of togetherness where all departments will be united under one roof and will work together across disciplinary boundaries to help shape a future worth living,” said Susanne Weissman.
A total of approximately 40,000 cubic meters of soil—the volume of 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools—is to be excavated for the foundation pit, a process that will take three to four months on its own. The second construction phase will be built as a mirror image of the first, with the same basic dimensions and the same number of floors, but will offer approximately 45 percent more usable space, including 1,400 square meters for student workspaces. Completion of the building complex, for which the state has allocated 57.3 million euros, is scheduled for fall 2023.
