A year ago, preparatory work began on the second construction phase of Mainz University of Applied Sciences; since then, the new building on the campus on Lucy-Hillebrand-Straße has been taking shape day by day.
The equivalent of 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools—about 40,000 cubic meters of soil – has been excavated for the construction pit since July 2020; on peak days, 70 to 80 truckloads of concrete are currently being used for the building complex, which will have a total usable floor area of 13,000 m².
Concrete pouring for the structure, which is divided into 10 sections, is being carried out section by section. In June, the final slab above the lower part of the building was poured; concrete pouring for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors will now follow.
The second construction phase is being built as a mirror image of the first, with the same basic dimensions and the same number of stories, but will offer approximately 45 percent more usable floor space, including 1,600 square meters for student workspaces. The state has allocated 57.3 million euros for the new building.
Completion of the building complex—which will house the departments of Technology (including the fields of architecture and civil engineering) and Design (including the fields of communication design, time-based media, and interior architecture)—is scheduled for fall 2023. The topping-out ceremony is scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of 2021.
