On November 20, 2019, the Geoinformatics and Surveying Student Council, organized by Professor Dr.-Ing. Klaus Böhm, took a field trip to the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research ( IGD) in Darmstadt. Several staff members from i3mainz joined them.
Dr. Eva Klien and Dr. Joachim Rix, both responsible for geoinformation management at the IGD, began by introducing the institute to the group. In the experimental lab, the students gained insights into various research topics in the field of augmented reality, after which they attended a lecture on the processing and conversion of 3D point clouds for high-performance display on the web. Finally, the students visited the Geoinformation Management Department, where they gained insights into current research topics:
After a concluding discussion, the students headed home. “It was very impressive to gain insight into the operations at a Fraunhofer Institute. Thank you very much for taking so much time for us,” said Georg Rassmann, the student council’s field trip coordinator.
