26th Federal-State Dialogue at Mainz University of Applied Sciences

For the first time, Mainz University of Applied Sciences hosted the “Federal-State Dialogue on Research at Universities of Applied Sciences,” which took place for the 26th time this year. On October 23, representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the individual states, as well as two representatives from the project management agency for research at universities of applied sciences (VDI Technology Center), toured the university. “We are very pleased to be the venue for this event,” said President Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Muth. “The strategic development of our research profile is one of our key priorities. In doing so, we will continue to focus on the targeted integration of individually operating research areas and work to shape our profile by setting priorities and fostering interdisciplinary networking within our university. This will allow us to establish further key areas of expertise in important fields of research and application. Furthermore, Mainz University of Applied Sciences aims to maintain and strengthen its excellent collaboration with industry, academia, museums, and public institutions.” According to the BMBF, the goal of the “Research at Universities of Applied Sciences” program is “to better tap into the potential of universities of applied sciences and harness it for Germany as a center of business and innovation.” The focus is on universities of applied sciences that conduct application-oriented research and provide practice-oriented training for the next generation of skilled professionals. Following an exchange of views and experiences with the university leadership, Prof. Dr. Jörg Klonowski presented the institute’s profile and current projects to the guests at the Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement Technology (i3mainz). Afterward, the representatives from the federal and state governments took part in a guided tour of the photogrammetry lab and the measurement lab at i3mainz. Among other things, they were shown the mobile robot (RoboLab) in combination with the ATOS Core structured light scanner, the “Augmented Reality Sandbox,” and a video about the project “Automated Design of Orthopedic Aids.”
