On April 3, things got really lively in the AIGeo department: As part of the annual Girls’ Day, 45 tech-savvy girls visited the Applied Computer Science and Geodesy department—curious, eager to learn, and armed with plenty of questions. After a tour of the labs and a view from the measurement roof—through the measuring equipment all the way to the stadium—they dove right into the heart of the matter: three workshops, three exciting topics, and plenty of “aha” moments!
Tour of the Labs and Up to the Measurement Roof
The drone pilots, for example, took off in the truest sense of the word: After a quick technical check and initial flight attempts, they discovered how aerial photos are turned into 3D models—and what else drone technology can achieve in geoinformatics.
General introduction and lunch break
In a second group, the focus was on the question, “How does a computer perceive a space?” The participants observed a laser scanner at work, exported the resulting 3D data, and experimented with it. Particularly exciting: With the help of simple algorithms, walls, furniture, and obstacles could be automatically detected in the virtual space.
A Glimpse into the Workshops
The third workshop group embarked on a journey into the world of cartography, because nothing works in geoinformatics without maps. The girls learned how to create and design simple digital maps themselves on the computer.
