On May 25, 2023, Daniel Czerwonka-Schröder successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled “Design of a Quality-Assured Implementation of a Real-Time Assistance System Based on a Terrestrial Long-Range Laser Scanner” at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. We extend our warmest congratulations to Daniel Czerwonka-Schröder on this achievement.
The extreme weather conditions triggered by climate change are affecting the Earth’s surface, for example through landslides, glacial melt, or changes in coastlines. To safely manage these impacts, high-quality three- and four-dimensional datasets of the Earth’s surface are required. Advances in terrestrial laser scanners enable the monitoring of topographic surface changes through permanent laser scanning (PLS).
The goal of this thesis was to systematically examine PLS as a method and to provide users with a better understanding of the influencing factors along the process chain, from data acquisition to the presentation of relevant information. The toolbox presented in this dissertation enables the automated analysis of multi-temporal point clouds using unsupervised machine learning and makes the resulting information available to the user.
The dissertation was reviewed by Prof. Dr. Jörg Benndorf (Technical University of Freiberg), Prof. Dr. Christoph Holst (Technical University of Munich), and Prof. Dr. Jörg Klonowski (Mainz University of Applied Sciences).
Daniel Czerwonka-Schröder’s connection to Mainz University of Applied Sciences dates back about ten years. In June 2014, he submitted his bachelor’s thesis under the supervision of Jörg Klonowski; two years later, he completed his master’s thesis on the development and evaluation of an automated GNSS monitoring system based on low-cost GNSS receivers. In addition to Jörg Klonowski, he was supervised by Dr.-Ing. Karsten Zimmermann of DMT GmbH & Co. KG, where he has been working ever since. We wish Daniel Czerwonka-Schröder all the best in his future endeavors, both professionally and personally.
