i3mainz Project: MoDiTa Reloaded

First Light for the New Generation of Modular Digital Camera Tachymeters

The goal is to ensure future-proofing by adhering to current standards: Just in time for the start of the winter semester, the comprehensive overhaul of the MoDiTa 3.0 modular digital camera tachymeter measurement system has been successfully completed.

Starting in the fall of 2023, Linus Jütz worked at the Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement Technology (i3mainz ) to prepare the software engineering for integrating the GenICam-compliant API IDS Peak, making significant progress through his expertise and dedication. The new API provides us with access to a wide range of state-of-the-art CMOS sensors. As part of his bachelor’s thesis, he has successfully developed and tested a test bench for high-frequency measurement series, which superbly rounds out his work for i3mainz in this field.

Since spring 2024, a completely redesigned camera adapter has significantly expanded the range of USB industrial cameras suitable for MoDiTa 3.0. This is made possible because the new design allows for the use of S-mount industrial lenses with different focal lengths. Last but not least, the redesign also offers a more compact overall form factor.

Starting in June 2024, Nele Kuhnen refined and tested automatic target point detection (ATR) for 3D laser scanning target markers in a checkerboard pattern as part of her bachelor’s thesis. This research topic stems from a suggestion by Dr. Kira Zschiesche, whose work on methods and algorithms for an imaging total station is once again confirmed by this thesis, which utilizes the completely revamped MoDiTa 3.0 hardware and software.
