A group of our students is currently on a field trip in Africa with Prof. Dr. Claudia Hensel, President Prof. Dr. Gerhard Muth, Prof. Dr. Hartmut Müller, Erich Weiler, and Carmel McMahon, a colleague from the University of Limerick in Ireland. They are visiting our partner universities in Uganda and Rwanda. The goal of the field trip is to submit joint applications to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to promote student exchange between African and German students. The cooperation is also to be expanded to include the field of engineering. In addition, the students are participating in various workshops. They are getting to know student life in the two countries and establishing contacts with their Ugandan and Rwandan peers.
The group from Mainz will follow a route from Entebbe, the former capital of Uganda, via Kampala, the current capital, to Kyambogo University. They will then cross the equator to Mbarara, where they will visit our second partner university, MUST (Mbarara University of Sciences and Technology).
The journey continues through Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Virunga Mountains, crossing the border into Rwanda, where they will visit INES, the Institute of Applied Sciences, in Ruhengeri. They will spend their final days in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, where a visit to the German Embassy is on the agenda. The group from Mainz will also visit the Genocide Memorial. The memorial and educational center in Gisozi, near the capital Kigali, commemorates the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
