Every year… the Kurt Dörr Prize is awarded. For years, it has been a tradition to present the Kurt Dörr Prize during the academic commencement ceremony to individuals or institutions that have made a special contribution to the Department of Economics. This year, the prize, worth 500 euros, went to Lothar Steiger.
Claudia Huberti, chairwoman of the Alumnity e.V. support association, emphasized that it was students and faculty members who had nominated Lothar Steiger for the prize.
Steiger, who holds a diploma in business administration (FH), is a lecturer for special assignments in the Department of Economics and, among other things, introduced the ECDL computer certification and helped develop a system for the “Business Planning” course. He also oversees the online survey system. He made digital access to exam papers possible and consistently inspires students with innovative IT projects.
The award winner is a homegrown talent. He completed his degree in business administration in 1978 and has been working at the university ever since. His first position was in what was then the computer center; later, he became a lecturer. Students describe Lothar Steiger as very reliable and helpful. He always makes time for students’ questions and concerns. As early as 2007, Lothar Steiger was voted the best university instructor in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition, he served on the departmental council for 20 years and on the staff council for 11 years.
The Kurt Dörr Prize was first awarded in 2004 during the graduation ceremony at what was then Department III of Mainz University of Applied Sciences at Bruchspitze. Prof. Kurt Dörr was the founder of the Higher School of Economics (HWS), the predecessor of today’s Department of Economics.
