“A Little Bit of Normality,” the bachelor’s thesis by media designers Michael Schaff and Thomas Toth from Mainz University of Applied Sciences, was awarded the prize for “Best Regional Short Film” at the 8th LICHTER Film Festival in Frankfurt.
The film tells the story of 33-year-old Julia, who has spent most of her life in Frankfurt’s drug scene. The birth of her son Samuel three years ago changed her life and gave her new hope. The film authentically depicts the life of a young woman caught between drug addiction and motherhood. The future is uncertain, but Julia and Samuel manage to hold on to a little bit of normalcy.
“Is she a good actress?” you ask yourself in the first few seconds, and hope so in the next. Then you recognize the genre and resist it, yet the little bit of normalcy Julia and Samuel have is overwhelmingly intense.
The LICHTER Film Festival takes place annually in Frankfurt am Main and is dedicated to promoting and showcasing films from the region. Above all, it aims to highlight the facets of life that are often overlooked in everyday cinema and television.
