Research up close – Mainz University of Applied Sciences will be there!

On September 13 and 14, 2025, the Mainz Science Fair invites visitors to discover, experiment, and marvel –  held for the first time on the Platz der Mainzer Republik in front of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament. With this year’s theme of “People and Learning”, universities, research institutions, and companies from Mainz and the surrounding region will be presenting their latest projects and interactive formats. In addition to the new venue, an additional morning exclusively reserved for school classes has been introduced for the first time this year on September 12. Mainz University of Applied Sciences will be represented with a diverse program and exciting projects on all three days.

The Institute for Spatial Information and Surveying Technology (i3mainz) will be presenting two applied geoinformatics projects during the Science Fair weekend. The “Marksburg in 3D” project presents a high-resolution, textured 3D model of the historic hilltop castle, which was created using laser scanning and drone images. The model can be explored both on screen and using VR glasses. The second project, entitled “Bridges at their limit,” demonstrates how modern profile scanners are used for the non-contact and high-frequency assessment of the condition of infrastructure structures. A live demonstration with a terrestrial laser scanner is planned on site.

In addition to i3mainz, the Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences (mainzed), the Institute for Media Design (img), and the cross-university transfer alliance EMPOWER will also be represented with their own booths.

On Friday morning, the tents will be open exclusively for school classes for the first time ever. Mainz University of Applied Sciences will also be represented here with contributions from all three schools and will offer a wide range of hands-on formats. Prof. Dr. Anke Reich from the School of Business will be holding an age-appropriate workshop on the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence. The i3mainz team will provide a practical approach to the world of 3D data. Jessica Buchner and Jana Ziegler will introduce school classes to working with point clouds, and their visualization and programming in two interactive stations, both on the computer and with VR glasses.

The EMPOWER transfer alliance is participating with several program events on Friday: Jacqueline Zwiener and Silke Eilers from Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society invite school students to discover their own strengths and develop their talents with “EMPOWER Kids.” Viktoria Diehl sheds light on digital reputations and shows how brand perception can be conveyed in a playful way. Stephan Struk uses an immersive virtual reality application to immerse visitors in an alternative reality. An interactive school lesson with a compact introduction to the topic of evaluation awaits the school students at the event held by Dr. Susanne Weiß-Wittstadt (EMPOWER network management and coordination) and Yasmin Leibenath.

The Mainz Science Fair once again offers a great opportunity to learn about research in an understandable and practical way. The event is aimed at people of all ages and promotes the dialog between science and the city’s residents.

Admission is free on all days.
