The Institute for Spatial Information and Surveying Technology (i3mainz) has made a decisive contribution to the research profile of Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The internationally recognized institute is one of Germany's two outstanding institutes in the field of space-related information and surveying technology and has undergone dynamic development. It is the most successful institute in terms of publicly acquired third-party funding (BMBF, BMWi, DFG, EU) at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. From 2012 - 2016 the i3mainz led an EU-funded international project on the targeted application of spatial metrology for the humanities with 60 partners from 28 countries.  Together with the two institutes of the School of Design, the Institute for Media Design (img) and the Gutenberg Design Lab, some of the research projects are implemented in a media- and design-oriented manner. The research work of these two institutes focuses on the communication of design, multidimensional visualization and time-based design solutions. The regular national and international design awards testify to the quality of the work.

Another successful field of research has developed in the field of civil engineering on the topic of "composite materials", represented by the Institute for Innovative Structures (iS-mainz), which emerged from the former Institute for Sandwich Technology, one of the nationally leading research institutions in the field of sandwich construction and currently the second strongest research institute of Mainz University of Applied Sciences. With the help of a number of newly appointed professors, the iS-mainz has strategically realigned itself and bundles the competences of lightweight steel construction, building dynamics, timber construction and material and design development.

The work of the Institute of Architecture (ai-mainz) focuses on the history of architecture, urban planning and construction in harmony with building research and the preservation of historical monuments. In addition, there is the design in existing buildings. The projects also focus on the effects of information and communication technologies on the digital recording of urban structures and buildings, as well as on the digital analysis, presentation, documentation and communication of space.

In the Department of Interior Design, new areas of competence in materials research have developed with the establishment of one of the most modern digital lighting laboratories in July 2009 and the establishment of the research area "Material as a design impulse".
In order to update the research profile, these competencies are to be integrated into the "Composite Materials" field of activity, renaming the research priority "Materials and substances".

In the School of Business, the content of the work focuses on the development of applied management or controlling solutions for companies, non-profit organizations or public authorities. In addition, the research area "Information Systems" is establishing itself with a focus on augmented reality, IT strategy and governance, as well as enterprise architecture management.

In addition, the iuh - Institute for Entrepreneurship, the first interdisciplinary professorship for entrepreneurship in Rhineland-Palatinate, deals with research work on entrepreneurship, especially in the art and creative industries. In the 2013 "Founding Radar" study conducted by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors' Association for the Promotion of Humanities and Sciences in Germany), Mainz University of Applied Sciences was ranked first in the nationwide founding rankings.
