The exhibition “More than Bauhaus,” curated by Prof. Dr. Regina Stephan and designed by Marius Druyen, an architecture student at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, is on view at the Architecture Pavilion of the Technical University of Braunschweig through December 19, 2019. Also on display is the documentary film of the same name, conceived and produced by Frithjof Heinrich and Malte Röthig, recent graduates of the Media Design program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
The two-part research and design workshop “From Dessau to Tel Aviv”—funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building, and Community through the BBSR, and whose results are presented in the exhibition—was a collaboration between Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Technology, the Technical University of Braunschweig, the Lower Saxony State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, Hanover, the University of Innsbruck, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and the Center for Jewish Art at the Hebrew University, both in Jerusalem.
Following presentations at LUX Mainz in May/June 2019 and at the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in Hanover in November 2019, the exhibition has been on display at the Technical University of Braunschweig since December 6, 2019, where the Research Center for Jewish Architecture, Bet Tfila, is dedicated to Jewish architectural heritage in Europe and Israel. Its staff member, Dr. Katrin Keßler, was part of the workshop’s research and supervision team, as was PD Dr. Ulrich Knufinke. They have now brought the exhibition to Braunschweig and, together with the Association for the Promotion of Bet Tfila e.V., the very well-attended opening night, during which Regina Stephan spoke on “The Architecture of Tel Aviv’s White City” before the film brought to life the dense, intense, and productive working atmosphere of the workshop.
Ulrich Knufinke said afterward that he was “very surprised by the enormous interest in the event and delighted by the great response to our project.” He expressed his hope that they might succeed in “turning the course into a regular event! I think,” said Knufinke, “yesterday was excellent publicity among our Braunschweig students.”
Further stops at the partner institutions in Innsbruck and Jerusalem will follow in 2020.
