A Listening Ear for Students

A Conversation with the University Chaplaincy Team

Counseling in difficult situations and conflicts, support for exam anxiety, experiences of discrimination and violence, and other life-altering situations – Christine Schardt (KHG) and Dr. Kerstin Söderblom (ESG) from the University Pastoral Care Team are available to listen to students seeking support and counseling. These services are available regardless of denominational or religious affiliation and range from one-on-one conversations to intercultural meetings, group excursions, and religious services. Christine Schardt is a spiritual guide, counselor, and mediator. Dr. Kerstin Söderblom is a supervisor, systemic counselor, and mediator. Starting November 10, they will introduce the “Open Space” initiative—a shared virtual lunch break. What exactly does this entail?
With this shared virtual lunch break, we’re offering an opportunity to meet one another without much planning—much like you would in the dining hall or cafeteria. Conversations arise spontaneously. Maybe just for a few minutes or for the entire lunch break. That’s exactly how we envision this initiative. Students can simply drop in and stay as long as they’d like. Especially for students who are new to our university, this is an easy way to get to know others and network. We’ll be opening this virtual space every Tuesday from November 10, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. What other events will be offered during the winter semester?
An“International Meet Up”will also take place during the winter semester. We especially invite students who come from other countries and are studying at our university in Mainz to attend. What we offer: sharing experiences, mutual support, information, networking, and whatever else comes up. We look forward to seeing all students who are interested in intercultural encounters. Is it currently possible to schedule an in-person appointment?
Due to the current situation, ourin-personofficehoursat the university are currently suspended. But of course, even—and especially—during these difficult times, we’re here for anyone seeking a personal conversation or spiritual guidance. We can schedule appointments via email or phone. Are there any other virtual events planned?
Yes, we’d especially like to highlight the digital event “Chat in the Church with #AndersAmen” this winter semester . YouTubers Ellen and Stefanie Radtke, two married lesbian pastors, have been running the very successful YouTube channel #AndersAmen since the beginning of the year. It explores Christian topics from a queer perspective and queer topics from a Christian perspective. The two will be taking a seat on the red sofa at the ESG Church. They’ll talk about their experiences as YouTubers and their life as a rainbow family. We’re looking forward to an exciting conversation on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Registration required at: esg (at) uni-mainz.de Counseling and On-Campus Services at the University
