The Mainz University of Applied Sciences Library is the first German university library to introduce a modern system that maximizes opening hours. Since the start of the winter semester, members of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences have been able to use the library during the semester from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. This was made possible by a new system, OpenPlus, which allows the library to be used even without staff on duty. The system originated in Scandinavia, where over 50% of libraries have already implemented it.
OpenPlus works through a combination of automatic entry control—activated cards automatically open the entrance door—video surveillance during OpenPlus hours, and mutual trust. The system relies on RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology, which the library switched to in 2018.
The video data is encrypted and is only accessed if an incident occurs that requires intervention for legal reasons, such as theft or property damage. Everything complies with data protection regulations, and users are not monitored. Borrowing and returning media is handled via a self-checkout kiosk.
“The system has been very well received in a short period of time. It offers greater flexibility not only for users but also for the library staff, who can now focus on more complex work processes and new services,” says Ivana Oruc, director of the university library, adding: “OpenPlus offers a wealth of benefits, including from an economic perspective—provided that users understand that their proper behavior is crucial for the system’s continued operation. After all, it can only work if everyone plays fair.” A student in a work-integrated master’s program comments: “OpenPlus has finally made it possible for me to use the library. Since I can only stop by in the late afternoon, Tuesday was the only option for me. Now it’s much, much better!” And a fellow student emphasizes: “What I like best is that we can now borrow books in the morning before class.”
