The Amazon logo is now a common sight on delivery vans on German roads. What is less well known is that these delivery vans are usually not operated directly by Amazon but by subcontractors, and that the package delivery drivers working in them are employed by those very subcontractors—sometimes under unacceptable working conditions. A joint investigative project by CORRECTIV, Saarländischer Rundfunk, and Nordsee-Zeitung exposed these practices yesterday. The investigation was based on confidential documents leaked to the journalists. Labor law expert Prof. Dr. Manfred Walser of Mainz University of Applied Sciences provided a legal assessment of these documents for the journalists as part of their investigation and concluded that the contracts leave the subcontractors very little room for maneuver and that there is even evidence of covert temporary agency work.
