The research publication Suche nach dem Unbestimmten by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steffen Kunkel of Mainz University of Applied Sciences on the pilgrimage complex in Neviges has been included in the Stiftung Buchkunst’s selection of the “25 Most Beautifully Designed German Books of 2026.” The award honors books that stand out for their design and conceptual quality.
The publication focuses on the significant pilgrimage complex by architect Gottfried Böhm and combines scholarly research and the author’s own photographs with an ambitious book design. According to the jury, it makes the connection between architecture, space, and academic reflection visible beyond the boundaries of the discipline itself. “Steffen Kunkel examines the entire complex for the first time in this volume and also conveys Böhm’s design attitude in a generous format,” the jury said in its statement.
“I am very pleased about the award because it makes a post-disciplinary practice visible: the book as a material medium of knowledge in which different research approaches, theory, and photography intertwine on equal footing—made possible not least through the collaboration with designer Prof. Markus Dreßen (Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig/Spector Books),” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steffen Kunkel, Professor of Architectural Theory, Building Theory, and Design in the Interior Architecture and Spatial Design program at the School of Design of Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
Each year, the Stiftung Buchkunst honors books that set standards in design, production, and overall concept. Its selection of award-winning titles is regarded as one of the most important accolades for book design in Germany.
