The stunning landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will host the 2029 Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA). Spanning a total of 67 km along the Rhine, the section of the river between Bingen and Rüdesheim in the south and Koblenz in the north will be the venue for the BUGA. The area’s tourism infrastructure is in dire need of modernization, and the Federal Horticultural Show is expected to provide a significant boost to the region.
In the “Hüttchen” workshop, architecture students at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, led by Prof. Kerstin Molter, developed mini-houses as tourist accommodations for the 2029 Federal Horticultural Show in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley —a project that the “Allgemeine Zeitung” Mainz/Bingen on September 12, 2020.

Task
The Federal Horticultural Show is intended to provide a strong boost for the region. The current
tourism offerings are outdated. There is a need for a contemporary offering that supports a diverse form of tourism while gently preserving the cultural landscape. In this context, a tiny dwelling—a little hut, especially one situated on a slope—presents a challenge.
In the workshop, concepts will be developed for how the little hut can be prefabricated and made energy self-sufficient, in harmony with the landscape and the World Heritage Site. The little hut can be assembled on-site in the simplest way possible from prefabricated parts, or it can be prefabricated as a single unit. The little hut should accommodate two people.
