Sommerrock Wood Construction Award

1st Prize for the design by Thomas Josef Fleck

As part of the “Construction Industry Day 2019” event, this year’s winners of the Sommerrock Wood Construction Award were announced on May 16. The project by Thomas Fleck from Mainz University of Applied Sciences was awarded first prize and received a total of €1,000. (Advisor: Prof. Jürgen Rustler) The Sommerrock Timber Construction Award is open to all architecture programs at universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and is sponsored by Mr. Adam Sommerrock. The focus is on the practical design of projects planned entirely or predominantly using wood or wood-based materials. With his design, Mr. Thomas Josef Fleck has succeeded in presenting an outstanding entry that meets the requirements of building in the historic half-timbered town of Miltenberg in every aspect of the assignment in a restrained, distinctly sensitive manner, while at the same time embodying the principles of contemporary wood construction in a highly convincing way. Mr. Fleck’s design superbly demonstrates how a historic building material and traditional construction techniques can be brought into the digital future: technically, structurally, spatially, architecturally, and, in particular, atmospherically.
